Data Entry Volunteer

Are you interested in wildlife? Are you comfortable working with computers? Do you want to gain experience with an organisation that collects, collates and manages environmental data in London? If the answer to these questions is ‘yes’ then we would like to hear from you.

Data Entry Volunteer

We work with partners, recorders, customers and the general public to collate detailed information on London’s wildlife and open spaces. We manage and supply that information to those who need to make informed decisions in London.

Data gathered by volunteer groups, individuals and during commercial surveys are valuable resources for future scientific and educational purposes. A key part of our work involves working with the data in its many different forms and managing it in a way that allows the best possible use of that data.

Data entry volunteers assist records officers in the following tasks:

–       Log incoming data

–       Manipulate incoming data so that it is ready to be imported into the GiGL database

–       Keep the metadatabase up to date

–       Work with local experts on data verification

–       Encourage data collection and sharing in Greater London

Please note there is no/very minimal GIS work involved in this volunteering role.

Key skills

Careful attention to detail is essential; as is an ability to work independently. Knowledge of data manipulation techniques is desirable but not essential. Training can be provided to improve knowledge in this area.

What GiGL can offer

You will be working with a team of wildlife data specialists in our office in Westminster. You will gain an insight into and experience of one of the fundamental tasks of a Local Records Centre, lots of assistance in transforming raw datasets into database-ready data and an introduction to Recorder 6 software.
