Accessible Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation

Kynaston Wood
Borough: Bromley
Grade: Borough Grade II
Access: Access on public footpaths only
Area: 2.84 ha

Description

The site is in private ownership, but is crossed by a public right of way. It is a small, well-structured ancient woodland, overlying London Clay and Thanet Sand sub-soils. The woodland borders a country lane, is surrounded by fields and is visible over a large area. However, it is quite isolated from other woodlands of similar size and quality.

Wildlife

The canopy contains ash, birch and oak, with a predominance of outgrown sweet chestnut coppice. The understorey includes hazel, field maple, holly, hornbeam, aspen and substantial amounts of regenerating elm. At ground-level the plant community is dominated by bramble and bracken, but is fairly diverse. It includes large populations of moschatel, along with bluebell, pignut, wood anemone, figwort and violets. The wood supports a good range of common bird species, including blackbird, chaffinch and chiffchaff.
