Connecting London’s Amphibian and Reptile Environments (CLARE)

by Sophie Hinton | Jul 1, 2011

© Chris Dresh

CLARE is an exciting new partnership project between Amphibian and Reptile Conservation, the London Wildlife Trust, GiGL and London’s Amphibian and Reptile Group. With support from the Heritage Lottery Fund the project aims to raise awareness and understanding of herpetofauna and produce reptile and amphibian atlases for the Greater London region.

The current lack of amphibian and reptile recordings in London means we are unable to deliver London’s Biodiversity Action Plan targets to establish a baseline population data set or to increase the distribution of amphibians and reptiles. We can only identify target areas for creating new habitat and therefore increasing the distribution of herpetofauna in London once we have first established where our native amphibians and reptiles currently reside.

The CLARE Project will be running a number of events, open days and training days throughout London over the next twelve months to raise awareness of the project, take note of your sightings and recruit volunteers to survey and create habitat on London Wildlife Trust reserves.

If you want to get involved in the project please get in touch with Sophie CLARE Project Officer: sophie.hinton@arc-trust.org and watch this space for future updates of the progress of the project. CLARE’s latest events can be found via the London Wildlife Trust and ARC event pages. Most importantly – if you have any reptile and amphibian sightings please contact GiGL or Sophie and let us know what, where and when.
