Site Background

The River Shuttle is a small tributary of the River Cray. It rises in Avery Hill and Eltham in Greenwich and runs through Bexley. It is heavily modified; modifications include realignment, re-sectioning, bank protection and the installation of weirs and other structures. Management of the river and riparian land is intensive and due to the the flashy nature of the river, flood risk is considered high.

Objectives

Project aims and objectives:
The aim of the project is to develop a plan of opportunities for enhancement of the River Shuttle.

Specific objectives were to:
– collate existing knowledge and identify gaps
– gather additional environmental data to fill gaps where possible
– identify urban pressures on the river corridor
– map opportunities and constraints for management, enhancement and conservation
– develop possible options for key areas of opportunity for preliminary consultation
