Clarefield Park
Borough: Barnet
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 2.04 ha

Description

This small park has been developed on a former wasteland that grew up on a rubble-filled plot adjoining the North Circular Road near Brent Cross. A children’s playground, all-weather games pitch and informal recreation areas with mown grassland were constructed to provide much-needed facilities for the neighbouring community. The development also includes beds of nectar-rich scented shrubs and a small wildlife pond.

Wildlife

A band of coarse grassland from the former roughland was retained around the edges of the site. This contains typical urban wildflowers associated with sites that have had some buildings in the past, for example mugwort, white melilot, common mallow, lesser burdock, and broad-leaved everlasting pea. Bees, butterflies, ladybirds and other insects are attracted to the wildflowers. Foxes are seen occasionally. Robin, wren and blackbird frequent the bushes and goldfinches are attracted to the seeding herbs. It is likely that frogs and newts breed in the pond.
