Accessible Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation

Park Hill
Borough: Croydon
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 6.83 ha

Description

This public park, right in the heart of Croydon town centre alongside the main railway line, is a remnant of a large deer park created for the Archbishops of Canterbury and used as such for nearly 800 years.

Wildlife

The park has small areas of woodland and plenty of scattered trees among the amenity grassland. Parts of it are being managed to improve the nature conservation interest and provide access to nature in an area lacking accessible wildlife sites. The southern part of the park, and the adjacent grounds of Deepdale Court, are less disturbed and support a good range of common birds, including three species of tits.
