Burtonhole Lane is an old green lane which now serves as a public footpath and bridleway. To the east are two fields supporting typical old London clay grassland. Amongst the habitats here are hedgerows, tall-grown trees, a wet ditch and a brook, as well as the fields. A narrow belt of woodland to the north of the fields with a footpath leading to Darland’s Lake is also included in the site.

Description
Wildlife
Burtonhole Lane is flanked by tall hedgerows, which have grown into woodland strips in places. A good variety of shrubs grow here including hawthorn, blackthorn, elder, bramble, suckering elm, dog-rose and field rose. There are lesser amounts of hazel, holly, goat willow and wild service-tree. A number of stately trees, mostly pedunculate oak and ash, tower over the hedges. Plants growing at the base of the hedge include wood forget-me-not, heath groundsel, great horsetail, stone parsley, barren strawberry, bluebell, ramsons, dog's mercury and lesser periwinkle. The wet ditch here has common marsh-bedstraw and marsh cudweed and supports breeding frogs. Birds frequenting the hedgerows include chaffinch, bullfinch, goldcrest and green woodpecker. Mammals include stoat, weasel and bank vole. The two fields lie to the east of Burtonhole Lane. The grass is dominated by Yorkshire fog, with tufted hair-grass in places. Damper areas are rich in plants, including sneezewort, pepper-saxifrage, greater bird's-foot-trefoil, false fox-sedge, cuckooflower and marsh thistle. The Burtonhole Brook crosses the fields, and contains plicate sweet-grass, water-pepper, common water-starwort and water mint. The small, shaded pool in the northeast of the site is fringed with crack willows.Facilities
