Accessible Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation

Lucas Gardens
Borough: Southwark

Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 1.73 ha

Description

This is a very pleasant and well-used park in a heavily built-up area of Camberwell, situated opposite the Town Hall. The gardens are wooded in areas, and are especially popular during the summer months.

Wildlife

There is a fine selection of mature trees supporting an interesting community of common birds. Pipistrelle bats have been recorded and may use the site for foraging and potentially roosting. In the south-west corner an herb-rich wildflower meadow has been created, left uncut with native scrub and standing dead wood. This likely provides important foraging habitat for pollinators and cover for insects in winter.
