An ancient monument site, with stonework depicting where the former St Mary’s monastery once stood. Recent archaeological excavations have revealed some of the remains of the first abbey of Erkenwald. Finds of jewellery, carved bone, pottery, gold thread and glassmaking have now made Barking Abbey into one of the most important religious archaeological sites in Europe. The ruins and grounds are situated a short distance from Barking town centre between Abbey Road and Broadway.
