Spring Park and West Wickham Common are part of the West Wickham and Coulsdon Commons, six of the open spaces, parks and gardens around London owned and managed by the Corporation of London as part of its commitment to sustaining a world class city. Spring Park is an ancient woodland and hay meadow and a site of metropolitan importance for nature conservation. The woodland was managed as coppice woodland for hundreds of years. Coppicing (cutting off the stumps at ground level) enabled products such as stakes and fuel wood to be regularly harvested for use in London.
The oak trees, which were planted at regular intervals to provide a crop of straight timber, still dominate the skyline.
