This large square is situated just behind the British Museum. It was completed in 1806 to a design by Humphrey Repton for the 5th Duke of Bedford, whose statue still stands in Gardens today. The Council was supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund to restore and refurbish the gardens. This award winning refurbishment included removing some of the cosmetic alterations made in the 1960s and installing a new central plaza and water feature. Russell Square has a café which is open all year and the expansive lawns and vibrant floral displays make it a popular lunchtime spot. Russell Square now benefits from the attentions of a permanent gardener.
