Athelstan Recreation Ground is an interwar park laid out on former fields. Its name recalls the Anglo-Saxon King Athelstan, who was crowned at Kingston in 925 AD. The park is mainly laid to grass with trees at the boundaries. In 2021 a programme of works developed the play areas with a medieval theme to include a castle themed multiplay unit, including a dragon and new moat designed surfacing. The junior play area is centred on a fort and includes a basket swing, climbing wall unit, 2 flat seated swings and a climbing spinner. There is a sandpit, trampoline, and inclusive equipment including a wheelchair roundabout and toddler swing with a You to Me’ seat that allows adults to accompany children whilst on the swing. The site also has a fitness area and football goals.
