Once part of Bethnal Green Poor’s Lands, this traditional park with grass, shrubs, mature trees and formal displays, including a raised mound of carpet bedding was opened in 1875. The Act that permitted purchase of the land for the Bethnal Green Museum required that any land not needed for the building would become a public recreation ground and be ‘laid out and for ever to be maintained as an ornamental garden’.
