Mutton Brook
Borough: Barnet
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 15.13 ha

Description

The Mutton Brook rises in Highgate and flows east towards Hendon, where it joins the Dollis Brook. The Dollis Valley Greenwalk follows the stream from Hampstead Garden Suburb to the junction of the two streams. The Capital Ring also follows the Mutton Brook here. At Lyttleton Playing Fields in Hampstead Garden suburb, the Mutton Brook is partially straightened and shaded by woodland on its northern side. Further downstream it flows through an attractive small park at Northway Gardens.

Wildlife

The brook is most natural downstream, alongside the A1 and North Citcular roads. Here, ivy-clad oak, ash and willow trees fringe the riverbank, providing excellent habitat for birds. Most of the catchment of the Mutton Brook is urban and, as a result, unfortunately the water quality is often poor. None the less, grey wagtails can usually be spotted foraging at the water's edge.
