Description

This site consists of a section of stream and adjacent habitats, including Bury Street Open Space, an attractive public park. The watercourse, a tributary of the River Pinn, arises from Ruislip Lido to the east and runs through the park in a channel shaded by a variety of trees The stream disappears underground at Ladygate Lane, to later re-emerge and join the Pinn in Old Priory Meadows.Bury Street open space is freely accessible. A designated walking route (The Hillingdon Trail) runs through the site. The streamside is accessible where it runs adjacent to Wallington Close, and inaccessible in its narrow corridor further west.

Wildlife

Trees including crack willow border the stream. Much of the open space comprises extensive native scrub including field maple, common hawthorn, blackthorn, bramble and hazel. Numerous scattered trees include oak, hornbeam and ash. The trees and scrub are punctuated with corridors of amenity grassland, edged with a variety of common wild plants such as wood dock and ground ivy.The site provides extensive cover for songbirds such as great-tits and robins, as well as green woodpecker. Unusually for a public open space, hornets are present. This large social wasp is scarce and very local in London, and it is possible that suitable nesting sites occur in the larger native trees at the site. The vegetated stream corridor extends westwards alongside Wallington Close.
