Highbury Fields
Borough: Islington
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 10.09 ha

Description

The largest open space in Islington borough, Highbury Fields is primarily a recreation area. The idea for a park at Highbury was first mooted in 1850, originally to include an area of over 200 hectares! By the time it was opened in 1885, most of the intended land had already been built on and today’s park represents the little that was saved from all-engulfing 19th century development.

Wildlife

There are avenues of mature London plane trees alongside paths and around the perimeter. Common birds here include goldfinches, dunnocks and blue tits, and on warm summer evenings bats, most likely pipistrelles, may be seen chasing over the park.

Facilities

Dog-free Area; Playground; One O'Clock Club; Refreshments.
