Accessible Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation

Barfield Allotments Nature Park
Borough: Barnet
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (part of site)
Area: 0.5 ha

Description

This site comprises a mix of rough grassland and scrub, grown up on a former allotment site. A playground was constructed a few years ago and is open at all times, while the wildlife area is accessible to key holders and by arrangement for school visits.

Wildlife

The relatively undisturbed habitat provides a refuge for common lizards and slow-worms. These attractive creatures hunt for insects and other small invertebrates amongst the grass and scrub, but also require open areas for basking. Both species are legally protected and completely harmless to people.
