River Roding in Barking
Borough: Barking and Dagenham
Grade: Borough Grade I
Access: Free public access (part of site)
Area: 6 ha

Description

A stretch of the River Roding, important for fish and birds. The banks include narrow sections of reedbed as well as more urbanised concrete embankments. A riverside footpath follows the site for part of its length.

Wildlife

The Barking section of the River Roding is semi-tidal, with considerable areas of exposed mud at low tide. Vegetation at the water's edge includes sea aster, wild celery, water dock and hemlock water dropwort, all rather scarce in London. Himalayan balsam is abundant. The river supports a good diversity of fish, including eel, stickleback, pike and flounder. The reeds support nesting reed warblers. Other birds present include the specially-protected kingfisher, and small numbers of migrant ducks and waders.
