Description

Opened in 1855 alongside what was then a peaceful country lane, this large but quiet cemetery is a hidden oasis of seclusion. The wildlife-friendlier areas are found deeper within the cemetery, past the more formally managed main entrance. Habitats include grassland, areas of trees and shrubs and a nature area in the south. There are two Grade II listed buildings in the cemetery.

Wildlife

Grassland plants such as cat's-ear, tansy, smooth tare and common bird's-foot-trefoil grow alongside woodland plants such as violets and giant fescue. The plants growing on and around graves and monuments include common orache as well as procumbent yellow-sorrel, bittersweet and great mullein. There is extensive tree and shrub cover, particularly in the south and east of the cemetery. Commoner species include Norway maple, silver birch, hazel, common lime and ash. There are also some field maples and small-leaved limes. The interior nature area has a similar mix of species, but additional here are common knapweed, hoary ragwort, greater bird's-foot-trefoil, figwort, meadow vetchling and tufted vetch.Birds and insects are abundant in the cemetery. Blackbirds, robins and great tits are common. Butterflies such as speckled wood and the declining common blue are found here.
