Biggin Hill South and Painter's Wood
Borough: Bromley
Grade: Borough Grade I
Access: Access on public footpaths only
Area: 23.41 ha

Description

Biggin Hill South consists of a large area of mature scrub, mostly of hawthorn, as well as woodland that has grown back onto the previously cleared chalk. Ancient beech woodland extends north in a narrow strip between houses. Painter’s Wood is a small ancient woodland which was seriously affected by the Great Storm of 1987.

Wildlife

Small areas of plant-rich chalk grassland survive within the scrub on Biggin Hill. One of these, William's Bank, contains greater butterfly orchid and columbine, both very rare in London, and a large population of pyramidal orchids.
