Covet Wood
Borough: Bromley
Grade: Borough Grade I
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 6.44 ha

Description

This sizeable ancient wood lies within a densely populated part of the Borough. Alongside the wood is Poverest Park, which has a playground.

Wildlife

This ancient lies on damp clay soils of the Woolwich Beds. Oak standards dominate the canopy over outgrown coppice of ash, hazel and field maple. A good ground flora includes the London notable species butcher's-broom and a colony of martagon lily, the latter presumably originally a garden escape. Two ponds with bordering grey willow contain wetland flora including small sweet-grass, which is scarce in London. Lesser spotted woodpecker has bred and may still do so.
