Charm Wood and Lower Broom Wood
Borough: Bromley
Grade: Borough Grade I
Access: Access on public footpaths only
Area: 9.51 ha

Description

Two ancient woods connected by wide hedges to form a sizeable area of woodland.

Wildlife

Charm Wood lies on clay-with-flints and is dominated by outgrown ash and sweet chestnut coppice with a few oak and beech standards. It has a good ground flora with a slight calcareous influence that includes abundant bluebell, yellow archangel, and dog's mercury with clumps of moschatel. Lower Brooms Wood was grazed in the 1980s and its ground flora suffered accordingly although it has now recovered significantly and is now similar to Charm Wood, albeit with a slightly lower diversity of species.
