Description

This site is made up of the Chalk Farm railway embankment and Adelaide Local Nature Reserve. The steep-sided railway embankment lies between Adelaide Road and railway sidings and has densely regenerated woodland. The nature reserve lies slightly to the west between the junction of Adelaide Road and Primrose Hill Road. It is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 4pm, and conservation workdays for volunteers take place regularly. Details of other events at the site can be obtained from the Council. There is no access to the railsides, although views can be had from road bridges and from trains to and from Euston.

Wildlife

The densely vegetated secondary woodland of the railway embankment is chiefly composed of sycamore, horse-chestnut, lime, holm oak, laburnum, elder and hawthorn. The ground flora on the railway embankment is dominated by ivy and bramble, and false oat-grass occurs towards the edges. The nature reserve in the western part of the site is far more open, with semi-improved neutral grassland and scrub present as well as woodland and a pond. The grassland areas feature red fescue, false oat-grass, common couch and bents intermingled with black medick, oxeye daisy, red and white clovers and creeping cinquefoil. Late flowering, insect-attracting species such as Canadian goldenrod, Michaelmas-daisy and rosebay willowherb are also present. The wooded parts of the reserve are covered in ash and oak with an understorey of young oak, hawthorn and hazel. The pond supports a range of planted wildflowers including yellow iris, meadowsweet, ragged robin and mare's-tail. To the west is a small area of ash trees with a ground flora dominated by cow parsley and a disused recreational area now covered in buddleia and bramble scrub with a scattering of ash trees.
