Wildlife

The site has a varied topography and vegetation structure, and flora includes red clover, wild roses, bracken, Yorkshire fog, false oat-grass, red fescue and occasional sheep's fescue. The area is likely to be particularly important for birds, insects, mammals (including bats) and reptiles. To the south of the camp are two grazed paddocks bounded by native hedgerows. The hedgerows comprise common hawthorn, elder, apple and crack willow; male-fern and ivy grows in their shade. The Salmon's Brook runs through the site and is a broad shaded shallow watercourse in this location. Exposed shingles are a feature of the watercourse. Bankside vegetation includes pedunculate oak alder, field maple, tall fescue and yellow flag. To the east of the farmland are two private blocks of woodland. To the south of the wood is a semi-improved paddock dominated by Yorkshire fog and common knapweed with abundant meadow vetchling and hoary ragwort. This paddock hosts a diversity of invertebrates.
