Wildlife

Whilst dominated by common reed, the reedbeds also contain glaucous sweet-grass, which is scarce in London, and several species of sedge. The open water supports a diverse aquatic plant community, including spiked water-milfoil, brooklime and water-starwort. Grassland on the central island contains a good diversity of common wild flowers, and there are extensive areas of scrub of hawthorn and elder. The site boasts a rich community of aquatic insects including the water stick-insect. The reedbeds support a large breeding population of reed warblers and water voles also occur here.
