Accessible Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation

Southwood Recreation Ground, New Eltham
Borough: Greenwich
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 2.16 ha

Description

The edges of this sports field have a good range of wildlife habitats, including flowery grassland, scrub and a small stream. The middle of the site is sports pitches, though these are currently not in use. The site is in an area rather lacking in accessible wild greenspace.

Wildlife

The stream that runs along the northern and eastern edges of the site has little vegetation, and is mostly surrounded by regenerating elm scrub. In the northeast corner of the site is an area of damp grassland where cuckooflower, typical of undisturbed wet grasslands, occurs among more widespread wildflowers. Drier areas support rough grassland and scrub of hawthorn, bramble and elder, with several mature oaks in the south.
