Spring Hill Playing Fields
Borough: Hackney
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 3.75 ha

Description

The grassland on this disused playing field, on the edge of the Lea Valley, is somewhat more species-rich than most of the grassland in Hackney. It lies next to Springfield Park, the River Lea and Walthamstow Marshes. A colourful wasteland flora has developed on the site of former buildings and tennis courts. This is a popular place with local people for informal recreation.

Wildlife

Wildflowers include bird's-foot trefoil, lesser stitchwort, yarrow, dove's-foot cranesbill and creeping cinquefoil. The grassland supports a good range of invertebrates, including common blue, meadow brown and gatekeeper butterflies. A damp area near the old pavilion, perhaps an old pond or a springline, supports a wetland flora including yellow iris, great willowherb, soft rush and a couple of crack willows.

Facilities

Allotments; community orchard; rugby pitches; changing rooms; tennis courts
