Description

There are actually three ponds here, just east of Uxbridge town centre; Uxbridge Common pond being the northernmost, Park Road pond (aka Brearley Close Pond), and Uxbridge College pond in the south. They are all well-vegetated and support important populations of amphibians, including the impressive great crested newt in two of the ponds. A group of residents help manage Uxbridge Common Pond on an ad hoc basis. The latter is fully accessible, but not the other two.

Wildlife

Uxbridge Common pond is set amongst mown lawns and scattered trees and is dominated by reed sweet-grass. Unfortunately two invasive aquatic plants are all too visible; New Zealand pigmyweed and parrot's-feather. The locally scarce mare's-tail and white water-lily are also present in the pond, with trifid bur-marigold and clustered dock at the margins. The upper bank is overhung by shrubs and trees, including crack willow, white willow and ash. The northern edge of the Common consists of sandy soil with acid grassland and scrub. Much sheep's sorrel is present, with occasional gorse and broom. Half of the surface area of Park Road pond is open water while a mix of floating plants covers the rest. These include greater reedmace, yellow iris and soft rush. Gipsywort, celery-leaved buttercup and water-plantain are also present. The waterbody itself contains bladderwort, one of our few insectivorous plants and very rare in London, along with occasional water-starwort. On its northern edge is a small area of wet woodland, dominated by common alder and both crack and grey willows.Uxbridge College pond is heavily shaded by grey willow, weeping willow and sycamore, and is covered by common duckweed. Living happily enough here though, are both great crested newts and common frogs.
