Description
Wildlife
Very few water plants grow in the river because it is so heavily shaded. Crack willow is frequent along the banks and branched bur-reed is dominant in some of the less-shaded areas together with occasional water chickweed. The wooded ditch and the section of the River Pinn to the south of the railway and north of Sweetcroft Lane are both rich in plant species. The ditch includes abundant yellow iris and frequent yellow loosestrife, the latter an uncommon species in London. The section of the Pinn running beneath the railway is a good wildlife corridor with a wide strip of riverside vegetation. The main part of the site comprises grasslands of false oat-grass and Yorkshire fog with abundant sheep's sorrel and frequent yarrow. Hedgerows separating the sports fields are dominated by hawthorn with blackthorn and English elm.A narrow strip of woodland forming a field boundary may be a remnant of ancient woodland. Its canopy is dominated by oak and hornbeam, with field maple, blackthorn and hawthorn as shrubs. Bramble, ivy, hairy brome and ground-ivy occur among the ground-flora.Facilities
