Description

Chessington Wood is most probably an ancient woodland consisting of oak, ash and birch, all growing on London Clay. An old hedgerow, bridleway and an abandoned railway embankment are included within the site, and the Bonesgate Stream flows along the southern margin.

Wildlife

The woodland ground flora includes the local rarities soft shield-fern, lady-fern and butcher's-broom. Breeding birds include coal tit, treecreeper and great spotted woodpecker.
