Description

Peabody Hill is an open space over the railway line between North Dulwich and Tulse Hill. The site is predominantly woodland with some peripheral grassland and includes the adjacent (inaccessible) railside land and tunnel entrances. The Peabody and Rosendale allotments cover a large area on the hill with spectacular views into central London. Part of the site is owned by the Peabody Trust.

Wildlife

The woodland has a variety of tree species, including sycamore, an area of silver birch, pedunculate and evergreen oaks, ash, wild cherry, hawthorn, blackthorn and, in places, poplars. The ground flora here features much ivy, bramble and common nettle. In a more open area with birch trees, Cladonia lichens, mosses, common bent, red fescue, hawkweeds, sheep's sorrel and common toadflax may all be found. The familiar fly agaric toadstool (red with white spots - see image) can be seen here regularly in early autumn. The varied grassland supports colourful wildflowers, such as common knapweed, cat's-ear, cut-leaved crane's-bill and goat's beard. These attract all manner of insects in the summer, including meadow brown, small tortoiseshell and speckled wood butterflies. The allotments contain a mixture of regularly managed and fallow plots, creating a mosaic of habitats benefiting a board range of species. The area is particularly important for hedgehogs, which are increasingly rare in London. Rosendale Allotments is important for amphibians and is also known to support a population of slow-worm. A variety of birds can be found across the area, including wrens, robins, blackcaps, blue tits and larger species such as great spotted woodpeckers, woodpigeons, jays and magpies.
