Derwent Road Flood Wash
Borough: Merton
Grade: Borough Grade II
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 1.96 ha

Description

A secluded hollow and mostly wooded, the flood wash is designed to store flood water for slow release down the Pyl Brook, thus preventing flooding of properties downstream. To the west is Morden Cemetery, a Metropolitan site.

Wildlife

The flood wash supports flower-rich wet grassland with uncommon species such as spiked sedge, grass vetchling and a carpet of meadow buttercups in June. A series of ponds have been dug around its edges, where dragonflies may be seen throughout the summer.
