Description

Cranmer Green is an area of grass on the north side of Cranmer Road, and was part of Mitcham Common until 1924. The Cranmer family held the lordship of the Manor of Mitcham from the mid-17th to early 19th century, and the family home was situated just on the other side of Cranmer Road, where Wilson Hospital is now.Cranmer Green Pond is in the corner of Cranmer Green, and evidence from maps shows it dates from some time between 1717 and 1823. It was probably created to enable livestock to drink and its main source is via rainfall. In 1991 restoration took place by removing large quantities of silt and much of the vegetation. The green was declared a Local Nature Reserve in 2003.

Wildlife

Cranmer Green Pond now has excellent vegetation, both in and surrounding the water, including plants uncommon in London such as common club-rush, mare's-tail and common spike-rush. The pond supports large populations of common frogs and toads, as well as a good range of dragonflies and damselflies. Some of the surrounding grassland is managed as meadow, to provide terrestrial habitat for the amphibians and invertebrates.
