Barnes Green Pond
Borough: Richmond upon Thames
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 0.65 ha

Description

Set in the close-mown grassland of Barnes Green, this is a quintessential English village pond.

Wildlife

Trees, mostly weeping willows, surround the pond that has a small wooded island. This provides a nest site for substantial numbers of common waterfowl, including Canada geese, mallards, tufted ducks, coots, moorhens and ornamental species. The large waterfowl community limits the amount of aquatic vegetation, but the northern and western edges have been planted with a variety of colourful wetland wildflowers, including greater spearwort, hemp-agrimony, ragged-robin, yellow loosestrife and purple loosestrife. These areas have been fenced off to protect them from the birds, and the vegetation is well established.
