Bandon Hill Cemetery
Borough: Sutton
Grade: Borough Grade I
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 7.85 ha

Description

This cemetery has an outcrop of sandy, well-drained soil allowing a range of plants typical of acid grassland to grow here. Several of these are rare in London. Among notable burials is Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, the Anglo-African composer who died in 1912, aged only 37.

Wildlife

Although the grass in the cemetery is mown frequently it has not been fertilised or reseeded, so unusual grasses such as crested hair-grass and spreading meadow-grass flourish. Flowers including meadow saxifrage, bird's-foot, prickly sedge, subterranean clover, hare's-foot clover and knotted clover are also present. At the bottom of the slope the soil is more neutral, but still supports a diverse and attractive range of meadow flowers.
