Description
Wildlife
The cemetery contains a good range of mature trees, including London plane, horse chestnut and pines. These are mostly planted in avenues. To the east (but not in the cemetery extension) there are several small areas of woodland, either dominated by ash or sycamore. A thick blanket of ivy is growing over tombstones and monuments beneath the trees, effectively producing a substitute for the shrub layer, which is largely absent. Between and around trees and monuments are patches of amenity grassland, with some more diverse grassland and patches of tall flowers and ruderal vegetation. A variety of common birds occur on site, including the declining house sparrow. To the south the site's centre is an ornamental pond, bisected by a pathway. Here yellow iris, great willowherb and great reedmace are particularly abundant. There is also a little pendulous sedge and water mint. This area is thought to harbour common amphibians.Facilities
