Twin Tumps and Thamesmere
Borough: Greenwich
Grade: Borough Grade I
Access: Free public access (part of site)
Area: 10.01 ha

Description

The Twin Tumps are two mounds surrounded by moats, a remnant of the former Woolwich Arsenal. Thamesmere comprises two more recent lakes connected by a canal, just to the north of Thamesmead Town Centre.

Wildlife

The moats of the Twin Tumps are fringed with reeds and support water voles as well as important native fish populations, including rudd and tench. The moats also support a good range of dragonflies, including emperor, common darter, black-tailed skimmer and common blue damselfly. The mounds and surrounds to the moats are dominated by wildflowers and scattered scrub. Thamesmere itself supports a good community of common waterfowl as well as grass snakes.
