Clapton Common Pond
Borough: Hackney
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 0.32 ha

Description

This ornamental pond on Clapton Common is a popular spot for locals wishing to feed the ducks. It has existed since the 1600s and was re-landscaped in the late 1800s for public use. It won a Green Flag award in 2020.

Wildlife

The pond has quite good wetland vegetation, particularly at the southern end. Here, common reed, common club-rush, yellow iris and soft rush provide cover for nesting waterfowl. These include coots and mallards. A large population of greater duckweed (rare in London) covers the surface of the pond.
