Description

Manor House Gardens were created from the grounds of a large private house built in 1771 and now a Lewisham public library. The park has recently undergone considerable refurbishment, with various features including the lake being restored and re-established. The restored park was opened in June 2000.The lake occupies the central region of the park and is probably the best site for breeding waterfowl in Lewisham borough. The River Quaggy flows through the south of the park, and there is also a small nature area with a meadow.Manor House Gardens won a Green Flag Award again for 20089.

Wildlife

Species which nest on the lake's wooded island include coot, moorhen, Canada goose, mallard and tufted duck. It is the only site in Lewisham where the latter species regularly breeds. The lake is also important for foraging bats (one of the best along the River Quaggy) - both common and soprano pipistrelles have been recorded. The River Quaggy flows in a gently meandering course over a clean, gravelly bed. The river is overhung by various trees and shrubs, many of them quite young. This area attracts many birds familiar in parks and gardens, but also siskins in winter. Alder seeds are a favourite food of this bird and it is one of the best places to see it in the borough. The small meadow area is planted with a wildflower seed mix.
