The Leg o’Mutton reservoir was built in 1838 and decommissioned in 1960 before being designated as a Local Nature Reserve in 1990. There is a mile-long perimeter path round the reservoir, which can be accessed from the Thames Path, Ferry Lane and Lonsdale Road. The site is a haven for wildlife where cormorant, heron, tufted duck and even breeding common terns can be seen. Bats roost in the enormous Poplar trees dating back to the 1850s.
