Wandsworth Common covers 175 acres and contains ecological and ornamental areas, sports pitches, tennis and bowling, a lake with fishing in season, trim trail and a children’s playground. This ancient common land dates back to the 11th century when people had rights which included the cutting of wood and shrubs, the grazing of animals and the digging of gravel. Management of the Common passed to the Borough of Wandsworth in 1971. Since then it has been nurtured to provide a balance between a natural habitat for wildlife along with sports facilities for the local community. Part of the Common known as the Scope is managed specifically for wildlife, containing young oak and silver birch woodland, different types of grassland and scrub habitats. The Common is also a home to a wide variety of urban wildlife including foxes, squirrels and numerous bird and invertebrate species.
