Mitcham Common is a large expanse of common ground, with playing fields, adjoining Mitcham golf course. It is within walking distance of Mitcham Junction railway station. There are views towards Croydon, and the Crystal Palace masts may be seen on a clear day. There are several ponds on the common, in areas where the River Thames once flowed and left gravel quarries that were subsequently excavated. Today there are only remnants of an old windmill that was built in 1806 and, reportedly, worked until 1860. It was struck by lightning in 1875 and never repaired. In 1915 the windmill was demolished, leaving only the base to be seen now. The Mill House Ecology Centre on Windmill Road provides facilities for school parties to do environmental studies on Mitcham Common. This centre is also used for lectures and to house displays on Mitcham Common and other ecology and wildlife conservation topics.
