Description

Clay Lane is a quiet country lane with fine hedgerows and mature trees, leading from Edgwarebury into the Hertfordshire countryside.

Wildlife

Ancient hedgerows line the route, with fine old oak, field maple and ash trees, standing over bushes of Midland hawthorn, blackthorn and hazel. Native honeysuckle and black bryony scramble up the trees; these climbing plants are considered to be living evidence of the hedgerow's antiquity. Swathes of cow parsley, greater stitchwort and red campion grow beside the path, with lords-and ladies, ramsons and the locally rare remote sedge in shady spots.
