A former post medieval burial ground, Crossbones Garden is believed to be the last resting place of an estimated 15,000 paupers, many of whom were sex workers and children. For years the site was almost forgotten, but in 1996 local writer John Constable and Katy Nichols started championing the site. Friends of Crossbones was formed in 2004 and since then they have worked to protect the site, promote its important history, and (in collaboration with Bankside Open Spaces Trust and other local individuals and companies) turn it into a garden of remembrance, a sacred place and a sanctuary in the heart of the City. The garden is open when volunteer wardens are available, usually between 12-2pm Wed-Fri and some weekend days. Please call 020 7403 3393 for specific opening times on the day you wish to visit.
