Tooting Common is the largest open space (92 hectares / 221 acres) in the Borough of Wandsworth. The Common is managed with the objective of retaining much of its natural character. There is strong local involvement to help achieve this, with a user group meeting regularly. The Common provides a good balance between amenities, sports land, grassland with mature trees and ecology areas. Tooting Bec Common and Tooting Graveney Common, together with Streatham Green, are the remains of common land that once stretched as far as Mitcham. Tooting Common is classed as a Site of Metropolitan Importance. The habitat comprises acid grassland, secondary woodland, scrub and ponds. It is a large open space with extensive areas of woodland and acidic grassland in an area of London severely deficient in good wildlife sites. The woodland is dominated by oak, with a range of other trees including hornbeam. It supports a good variety of woodland birds for an inner London site.
