Area: 11.24 ha

Description

This site includes the ancient woodland of Foxley Wood and some peripheral areas of species-rich chalk grassland. The area was first recorded on maps of 1762 and it is a statutory Local Nature Reserve.

Wildlife

The wood is mainly composed of oak and ash, with a well-developed understorey of hazel coppice. There are also sycamore, wild cherry and planted sweet chestnut trees. The ground flora is typical of such ancient woodland, and includes dog's mercury, wood millet, wood melick, wood false brome, bluebell, and wood anemone. Common valerian has also been recorded here. To promote the development of the grassland, the Friends of Foxley Wood have removed most of the hawthorn scrub that was taking over. Downland species surviving include marjoram, rockrose and upright brome. The area is good for insects, including several grasshoppers and butterflies. Amongst the butterfly species are small skipper, Essex skipper, speckled wood, meadow brown and ringlet.
