Accessible Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation

Eastmoor Street Park
Borough: Greenwich
Grade: Borough Grade II
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 1.71 ha

Description

A recently created park, the northern section of which is managed for nature conservation. Habitats include grassland and a small pond used by local schools for environmental education. The Green Chain Walk passes through the site.

Wildlife

Soils here appear to be alkaline in places and typical chalk grassland plants are present. These include bee orchid, yellow-wort, purple fleabane and common centaury, all of which are uncommon in London. Although a wildflower seed mix has boosted the grassland diversity here, at least the orchid has colonised naturally. The grasslands also support large populations of common butterflies and other insects. A small pond has sea club-rush in its edges and supports dragonflies such as common darter and common blue damselfly. The southern section of the park is more formally managed, but has substantial plantings of native shrubs and trees.
