Accessible Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation

St John the Baptist Churchyard, Eltham
Borough: Greenwich
Grade: Local
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 1.08 ha

Description

A green oasis in the centre of Eltham, this attractive churchyard has been managed for nature conservation for several years.

Wildlife

The grassland between the graves is surprisingly diverse, with common knapweed, oxeye daisy, hairy sedge and meadow buttercup growing among a sward with a large proportion of sweet vernal-grass. The churchyard contains several large yew trees, and young sycamores threaten to swamp some of the grassland. The gravestones support numerous lichens, though these have not been studied in any detail.
