Description

The largest park in Hackney, set in the grounds of Clissold Mansion. The latter was built in the 1790s and is a Grade II listed building. It was first opened as a public park in 1889 after a campaign to prevent development of the area. The mansion now houses a cafe and the park has a number of animal enclosures. The park’s main points of nature interest are two sizeable lakes. It also has areas of scrub, neutral grassland and numerous veteran trees. Clissold Park won Hackney’s first ever Green Flag Award for 2005/6 and has retained it in 2020.

Wildlife

The two large lakes have been planted with a good range of aquatic plants. They support a variety of common waterfowl. A further waterbody in front of the mansion is a remnant of the New River. Pipistrelle bats are frequently seen in the park.
