Accessible Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation

Holickwood Park
Borough: Haringey
Grade: Borough Grade II
Access: Free public access (all/most of site)
Area: 2.02 ha

Description

This attractive park was originally landscaped by Barnet Council, using compensation money for widening the adjacent North Circular Road. It very effectively combines both formal and informal areas, including meadows, shrubberies and a pond.

Wildlife

The extensive meadow areas support swathes of common wildflowers, such as oxeye daisy, common knapweed and greater bird's-foot-trefoil. The dense shrubberies provide nesting sites for birds, including a good population of the declining house sparrow. The pond and its island support nesting moorhens and Canada geese. Hornwort is abundant in the pond and both cyperus sedge and yellow loosestrife are among the wetland plants planted at the edges.
